Fueling the Film Industry

  • Petroleum-based products are used throughout the film industry. Items include: rubber camera mounts, plastic dolly wheels, elastic stabilization mounts, carbon-fiber arms, plastic clamps, polyester light reflectors and a lot of gas for generators and transportation.
  • The first film stock was made commercially available from Eastman Kodak in 1889. It was a thin celluloid strip made of petroleum-based thermoplastic.
  • The movie industry uses between 2 and 3 billion feet of film each year.
  • Le Voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon) is a 1902 French silent film directed by magician and stage producer Georges Méliès. Extremely complex and imaginative for its time, the film tells the adventure of a group of astronomers who pilot a rocket to the moon. It’s considered the earliest example of the science fiction genre in cinema and is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films of all time.
